Equine Medical Services offers extraordinary mare and foal care for even the most critical of cases. Our staff has had years of experience with neonates, whether tending to their own mares and foals, or caring for those at the hospital. - Large specialized stall designed for foaling and/or critical neonatal cases. The stall is able to physically separate the mare and foal to allow for safe medical care to be administered to the foal while the mare is still able to see, touch, and smell her foal. Examples of situations in which we use this stall include premature foals, neonatal diarrhea, pneumonia, and when the mare is aggressive towards the foal. These stalls can be heated and are set up for easy delivery of IV fluids and medications.
- 24-hour monitoring by experienced, professional staff. Foaling stalls are also set up for video monitoring.
- Humidified oxygen delivery system
- IV fluid therapy with Flo-Gard Volumetric Infusion Pump allows for precise monitoring of fluid intake
- IgG analysis measures the level of antibodies in the foal' s system available to fight infection
- In-house laboratory with capabilities for CBC (complete blood count), serum biochemistry (enzymes, proteins and other indicators of vital organ function) as well as blood gases (the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood), electrolyte and fibrinogen (an early indicator of stress, inflammation and possible onset of infection in foals especially) analysis
- Digital ultrasonography for visualizing structures such as the umbilicus, heart, intestines, and lungs
- Digital radiography for visualizing the lungs, bones, joints, and GI system
